Reddy Bikeshare, in Partnership with Independent Health, Expands into Tonawanda

Reddy Bikeshare, Tonawanda Mayor & Slow Spokes will celebrate two new stations on special group ride on Wednesday

Access to biking along Western New York’s most popular trails is getting a lot more robust with Reddy Bikeshare’s first station expansion into Tonawanda.

This week, the Reddy Team, in partnership with Independent Health and with support from the City of Tonawanda and the Niagara River Greenway Commission, installed two new stations at two popular biking destinations:

  • The Intermodal Hub & Trail, 36 Young St

  • Niawanda Park, across from Niagara and Franklin street

This expansion marks the bikeshare network’s first footprint outside the city limits of Buffalo and Niagara Falls. These locations stand out because they are the meeting points of the Tonawanda Rail-to-Trail and the Empire State Trail.

“After years of continued success, we’re excited for Reddy Bikeshare to expand outside of city limits and establish a presence in Tonawanda along two of the most utilized trails in our region,” said Kathy Glieco, Vice President-Marketing, Independent Health. “This milestone signifies a significant advancement in providing access to affordable bikes to those who live in the suburbs surrounding Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Since our partnership began in 2016, Independent Health remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing community health and well-being. Particularly as bicycling has surged in popularity during the pandemic, Reddy Bikeshare offers an ideal opportunity for individuals to maintain active lifestyles while enjoying the natural beauty of our surroundings.”

In celebration of this first expansion into Tonawanda, the Reddy Team is inviting the public to meet up for a special group bike ride 6 PM, Wednesday July 10, starting at Old Man River, 375 Niagara St. All folks who unlock a Reddy Bike for the trip will be given special riding credit and a free helmet. The group bike ride will be led by Slow Spokes, a growing bike club that invites casual cyclists to weekly group rides in the Tonawanda community.

“Every year our Team observes a new record number of trips on bikeshare and that is fueled by the demand for more active transportation options, said Simon Husted, Reddy’s Communication and Marketing Coordinator. “It is through our work with private and public partners that we deliver the affordability and service people here deserve.”

This expansion is part of Reddy Bikeshare’s overall vision of creating a culture of health in Western New York by supporting recreation and exercise through bicycling. In the last year, the organization has added 11 stations across WNY serving its mixed fleet of 680 bikes, including e-bikes—called Reddy+. Those new stations include:

  • Buffalo Harbor State Park

  • West Side Bazaar

  • Buffalo History Museum

  • Devil’s Hole State Park

  • 4 stations throughout Niagara Falls State Park

  • DeVaux Woods State Park

  • Whirlpool State Park.

  • Erie County Rath Building, Downtown Buffalo

“I am personally very excited about Reddy Bikes coming to the City of Tonawanda,” said Tonawanda Mayor John L. White, who will be joining the Slow Spokes Ride. “This is part of my vision of making this City a destination, people will come to be near the three waterways & want to go for a ride. In closing I would say ‘the City of Tonawanda is Ready for Reddy Bikes.’”
